The Institutes - All I Need SINGLE REVIEW

The Institutes are a thoughtful and innovative quartet. Melodic, energetic, peaceful and furious in their exploration of love, life and the social structures that bind us as much as they divide us. The Institutes seek textures in their hooks and rhythm in their wrath...

The self release of their debut single 'Million Miles' back in February of this year gained  Coventry four piece The Institutes gigs all over the UK, a support slot with YOTA (Ex Gorillaz/Beady Eye) and a spot on the main stage at this year's Godiva festival, the UK's largest free festival which takes place annually in their hometown of Coventry. Not bad for a band who have been around for merely a year.

Now they're back with their second offering of anthemic, melodic, guitar heavy UK indie rock. Set for self release on the 18th August, just one year after their debut live performance, All I Need is all you can expect and more from a follow up single to a debut as strong as 'Million Miles' and has been produced once again by infamous Midlands based producer Gavin Monaghan (The Sherlocks, Editors).

With that classic guitar band aesthetic, a concoction of denim and well maintained man hair mixed with a moody monochrome online presence, the Institutes tick all of the boxes for a good UK indie rock band. However the Coventry band offer a darker, slightly heavier take on the genre, with a driving wall of sound consisted of multitracked guitars and bass that provide the perfect backdrop for lead singer Andrew Ferris' soaring vocal, which sits above.

All I Need is no exception. Immediately you're hit by a barrage of guitars and drums. It is clear from this that the Institutes are very much a live band. This is captured perfectly on the recording, which in-fact isn't a million miles away from the huge live sound of Britpop icons Oasis' early recordings. The initial verse section sees lead guitarist Andy Hall take a step back whilst Ferris' vocal takes centre stage, melodic and powerful in his delivery. The bass and drums lock together behind it,

Every twist and turn of All I Need has been crafted to perfection, showing in all its beauty the Institutes' mastery of arrangement and composition. I must say, the track contains one of the best pre-chorus' I've heard in a while also, both musically and lyrically.
The chorus is bold and anthemic. 'And all I want from you, is everything but the truth and all I need from you to get me through these blues...' sings Ferris, exploring and debating the theme of love and lust within his songwriting,'You're all that I wanted, you're all that I needed'. Guitarist Andy Hall mimicks the chorus melody, reinforcing the hook of the track.
The second chorus ascends into a well written bridge, which ends in an instrumental section in which each element of the rhythm section is heard in all its glory, thumping Bass and Drums as well as a melodic octave guitar part.

The track is consistent and flows seamlessly between huge chorus' and verse sections, with Halls' guitar lines providing the glue that bonds each section of the track together. It always refreshing to hear a creative Guitar player filling out the sound of a band, which is essential for a 4 piece band such as the Institutes to retain that stadium filling sound. You would not guess this from their sound on record. The Guitar also takes the lead in the outro, where a 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' style hook is played.
I would say there are hints of rock influence laced within the sound of the Institutes. Ferris' vocal shares the same velocity and power of the great Chris Cornell of Seattle grunge icons Soundgarden, who are also well known for the distinct masses of distorted guitars on their recordings.

Coventry has always had a great reputation when it comes to quality, be it the local bands or the live music scene. The Institutes are an indication that this has not, and will not change any time soon and are set to spearhead the Coventry movement into the UK mainstream.

All I Need is set for self release by the Institutes on the 18th August 2017, save the date, you may well discover your new favourite band...
